As music lovers, we have our own ways of unearthing new finds to fall in love with. However, sometimes finding new music can take some dedication and effort. Unless you’re an obsessive music freak like me, you may not have the time or patience for that kind of thing. No worries. I’ve got your back. Here’s a batch of new songs I think are worth checking out.
Like I Used to Be – Matt and Kim
This indie pop duo has a staple and they tend to stick to it. If you’re a Matt and Kim fan, then you know that they’re known for up-tempo, quick beats that are dance infused and drip with high energy. I’ve always liked Matt and Kim well enough, but this recent single is a borderline anomaly that makes me enjoy them more. You get an upbeat, dance track from them that you expect but there’s an added urban flavor in this single that I dig.
Forever – Sa-Roc
You guys. I’m so pumped about Sa-Roc. If you haven’t heard about her, here’s what you need to know. She’s a badass MC, smooth lyricist to the core and has a reputation for holding her own alongside acts like The Roots, Atmosphere and Talib Kweli. As soon as this song started I was thrown. This woman is a beast who is blazing her own path unapologetically. With Forever, she creates an anthem of empowerment that leaves flames its path.
Strawberries & Cigarettes – Troye Sivan
Residing on the I Love Simon soundtrack, dance-pop artist Troye Sivan delivers Strawberries & Cigarettes which is every bit as hopeful and sweet as the movie was. It’s a simple and light love song that’ll be a great addition to any date night playlist.
Done for Me – Charlie Puth ft. Kehlani
This is a ridiculously catchy and slick track that will have you tapping your feet and fighting the urge to nod along within seconds. Charlie Puth brings his traditional pop to the song while Kehlani smooths it out with the temporary r&b flavor she’s come to be known for. It’s reminiscent of Michael Jackson meets Prince meets George Michael.
Nil-SOHN
I’m a sucker for ethereal and haunting electronic music. And, when there’s a gritty beat running under it? That’s icing on the cake. London-based SOHN checks that box for me with his track Nil. He’s worked on remixes for the likes of Lana del Rey and Rhye if that gives you a taste of what to expect. Get ready to relax to this one.
Lemon (Drake Remix) – N.E.R.D., Rihanna, Drake
Can we get a “welcome back” for N.E.R.D? Full disclosure: I first heard this song on Snapchat. It’s ok. Judge me. N.E.R.D., Rihanna and Drake come together to bring you this catchy club banger that you’re likely to be hearing a lot as time goes on. It’s your basic dance jam that could easily end up on your next hype mix.
My Life – ZHU, Tame Impala
ZHU has a reputation for being an electronic-infused enigma, while Tame Impala has laid the groundwork for making themselves known in the realm of psychedelic pop in a post-Pink Floyd world. The two combined their flavors together on this trippy dance track that was made for festival life.
I’ve added these tracks to a new music roundup playlist on Spotify you can follow. If you’re looking for new tracks to add to your own lineup, be sure to check back!
